PREM: KEEP CALM AND OIB ON (from your home)

In the first module of our class today, I went over our plan for COVID distance learning.

Tools we have put into place:

x whatsapp group (possibility for video chats and calls)

x blog

What to expect:

x Reading!

Week 1: “Stranger in the Village” (essay by James Baldwin)

Week 2, 3 (4): Sweet Bird of Youth (play by Tennessee Williams)

Texts were handed out in class but here are links to the texts in PDF in case you were absent or prefer the digital version:

Stranger in the Village

Sweet Bird of Youth

x some OIB practice timed writing tests (essays)

x instructional videos or video chats

x interaction and literary discussion on the blog/short prompts

Later this weekend, I will make up a scheme of work/schedule for your work with clear expectations and post/send it to you.

Next, in class we continued using the discussion questions to wrap up our study of “The Interpreter of Maladies” short story collection:

Discussion Questions Jhumpa Lahiri

These questions also led us to make links with other works on the OIB syllabus that we have studied so far.

After, we watched an introduction to James Baldwin and took notes:

For those of you who were not present today, make sure you watch the video and take notes yourselves!

I handed out the next work on our OIB syllabus Stranger in the Village. We read the first page together and discussed the various literary devices put into place by Baldwin (look for: point of view/narration, tone–colloquial, familiar, a closeness to the reader, a journal-like style—, listing, build-up, alliteration, puncutation and rhythm, shifts, diction…).

Please read and annotate the rest of the essay for next TUESDAY, MARCH 17TH. Be ready to digitally comment and discuss the essay.

More updates to come this weekend. Students, please comment/interact below to try out the blog!

Happy reading!
